Many people find it difficult dealing with depression and anxiety in the workplace; you are not alone.   It is hard to keep a good positive balance as work is often very demanding.   If this is starting to affect your life, please seek help from a professional as only  they can properly diagnose and help treat your depression.

Take advantage of your company’s benefits plan or a program they may offer; many companies are now seeing how depression affects the work of employees and are offering in house programs and treatment options.  It’s as simple as contacting your company’s Human Resource Department and asking if it is covered in your benefits plan or if they offer a program for depression.  If your workplace doesn’t offer any programs for depression, ask your General Practitioner or local health clinic about getting checked.

Getting help from a professional will help you find the source of your depression; your trigger points.  To help manage depression you must remove or learn to accept the problem.  Learning to think more positively will also help.  The more negative thoughts, the more susceptible you are to getting depression.  It’s sometimes difficult to be positive at work, especially if you are not in an environment you enjoy, but you must not let anxiety and/or stress control you.  If you do start feeling depressed, try doing something constructive or think positive thoughts.

Depression can result in some people trying to fill an emotional void by turning to food.  They will get an unexpected craving for junk food and even as simple as over eating.  On the other hand, depression, can make others start to lake interest in food and lose weight without even noticing it.  When at work I try to keep something to snack on near my desk.  This keeps my mind off food and my stomach satisfied!

As like with weight change, depression affects peoples sleeping patterns with one extreme or the other.  People can either suffer from insomnia or become suddenly tired and sleep all day.  Waking up in the middle of the night constantly, is a very common symptom of people suffering depression.  Its hard to stay happy and alert at work without getting a goodnight sleep.  People become very angry and irritable and find it hard to get tasks completed.

Not many people know that depression has physical symptoms as well.  When suffering an depression episode, people will sometimes feel sick to their stomach, knots in their gut, overall body aches and pains, or exacerbated chronic conditions.  It will also lower the body’s immune system causing constant illnesses; such as the flu or a cold.

If you are constantly depressed it is easier for people to become frustrated.  In most instances people that are frustrated usually manifest anger.  Some people believe that anger is merely depression turned inwards.  Having little things that normally don’t bother you control the mood of your day is a common symptom of depression.

Many people find that they are unable to focus/concentrate when suffering depression.  For some a simple task is being drug out for three or four times longer than it should take, others struggle to formulate their thoughts coherently.  This can be very hard to deal with, especially at work.  If you are feeling like you have no mental energy and your mind is consistently wandering; it might be time to seek professional help for your depression.

 

Depression can be overwhelming at sometimes and interfere with your ability to work.  You must however keep a positive routine and remember you are not alone.  Take some initiative if you are feeling depressed.  Only you can go see a professional that can help you treat depression.
